After numerous attempts at trying to halt production, Suave House Records is finally
dropping a new release by Miami rapper Rick Ross.
The new album, titled Rise To Power, features Ross before his deal with Def Jam
alongside rappers such as Scarface, The Clipse, Next, Devin Tha Dude, and Big Duke of
Boyz N The Hood, among others.
Suave House Records' Tony Draper was the person who originally discovered Ross in
2000, but after a botched distribution deal for the album, he released Ross, so he
could sign with Slip-N-Slide in 2002.
"Ross was signed to me in 2000 -- I found him," Draper told Billboard. "I'm the key
to the south. Unfortunately, I was in a bad situation with Jcor Entertainment. I had
a joint venture deal with Jcor, who had their distribution deal with Interscope
Records. Jcor was supposed to supply marketing dollars, but they didn't. They only
paid $500,000 on a $5 million tab. So to not tie up my artist, I allowed Ross to go
to Slip-N-Slide Records in 2002."
After inking a deal Slip-N-Slide (SNS), SNS then entered into a joint venture deal
with Def Jam Records in 2006, and the rest is history.
"Def Jam tried to stop me from putting the record out, but with the help of [Slip-N-
Slide head] Ted Lucas, we've finally worked it out," explained Draper. "Def Jam
wanted me to compensate them for building the Rick Ross brand. So I ended up giving
them a point on the album. I have no problem with Def Jam, but honestly, they
couldn't have stopped me. Def Jam stepped up in a classy manor. But if they hadn't
raised up, I was ready to go the whole legal route. Def Jam can't stake a claim to
the masters that I own."
The first single from the forthcoming release is "Street Love" featuring platinum R&B
group Next.
Rise To Power is slated to drop September 18.

James BluntÆs family have served in one kind of army or another since 995A.D.
A long line of warriors. Savages really. Not a musical bone in any one of
their bodies. The only music he heard growing up was ôHappy Birthdayö and
ôSilent Nightö. His father considered all music, even classical, to be
unnecessary noise. Although James was not one to rock the family boat, he
didnÆt really think he was going to join the army û it sort of crept up on
him. Plus his family didnÆt have a boat. Aged fourteen he just held the
teenage conviction that he would have an interesting life û maybe thatÆs why
he picked the guitar? Then again, maybe if he hadnÆt, he would have tripped
over it. He went to University and studied Aerospace Manufacturing
Engineering and Sociology, spending most lectures asleep on the floor at the
back. In much the same way, he ended up in the army. In essence, one day he
was sleeping off a hangover at the back of a sociology lecture hall and the
next thing he knew he was in Kosovo with a gun and a guitar strapped to the
side of a tank, wondering who he could possibly sleep with to get out of this
war. To break up the super attenuated monotony, James would sometimes stroll
through Serb villages wearing an East German cap singing, ôAll we are saying
is give peace a chanceö. ôWe were peace-keepers at that point,ö he explained,
shrugging helplessly.

So how did the music get into him, you might ask? Well if you were sent to
boarding school aged seven, studied Engineering by mistake (ôI thought we
were going to fly planes, but we just pulled metals apart û the brochure was
very misleading.ö), joined the army by default, guarded The Queen, buried The
Queen Mother and pranced around London like a tit for Japanese tourists to
photograph, what youÆre going to want to do very much after that, besides
getting stoned and laid, is put your gun down, pick up a guitar and make an
album in America with Linda Perry. So James came to Los Angeles in September
2003 to record with Tom Rothrock et al. At night heÆd go to bars, bringing
with him his valuable British accent (in the U.K., too posh for some people û
in LA, the best thing sheÆd heard all night) and the fact that like 50 Cent
heÆd been shot at numerous times, but unlike the Cent, had dodged the
bullets. One song, ôGoodbye My Loverö, was recorded in his landladiesÆ
bathroom (ôShe was a frequenter of mental hospitals and in general, a freak û
but pleasantö) where, naturally, she kept a piano.

From birth in a military hospital in Tidworth, to Harrow School, to Aerospace
Manufacturing Engineering, to the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, to The
Household Cavalry, to Kosovo, to Buckingham Palace, to a recording studio in
Los Angeles. How did James get from there to here? Only James BluntÆs
hairdresser knows for certain, and either he isnÆt talking or James cuts his
own hair, and itÆs up to you to join the dots û there are ten of them on the
album.

For someone who scored one of the biggest hits in recent
memory with 2005's "Ridin'" -- which earned the Houston
MC a Grammy and sold more ringtones than any song in
history û Chamillionaire sounds awfully grumpy. "Money
don't do nothing but bring you trouble," he says in the
lead-in to "I Think I Love You," a tragic tale where cash
is the object of the rapper's affection. It's a recurring
sentiment on Cham's second disc, on which he lashes out
at the record industry, money-grubbing ex-friends and lazy
rappers shilling ôcrap music.ö Luckily, he backs up the
bluster.
ôPimp Modeö is a syrupy Texas gem, with acoustic guitar
and a stellar verse from hometown legend Bun B; the soulful
ôWe Breakin' Upö is one of several cuts on which the MC
sings as much as he raps; and the album-closing manifesto,
ôThe Ultimate Victoryö -- on which Cham expresses sympathy
for media-dogged celebs like Eminem and Britney and admits,
ôI'm still filled with doubtö -- might be the most
personally reflective hip-hop track since Slim Shady
himself stepped to the mike.
